Every weekday, at 4:30 p.m., Mary Lou Schmidt drives a short distance from her home to the St. Mary's Medical Center chapel for Mass.

"It seems I can pray better there than anywhere else," Schmidt, 74, said. The large chapel's altar, interior and stained-glass windows are "beautiful," she said.
