Summary
Flash forward to 1989, the DDR's 40th anniversary. Amidst the usual red banners and blaring propaganda, a peaceful crowd of Ossies (East Germans) marches to the Wall, to be met with truncheon-wielding cops who beat up Alex (Daniel Bruehl), among others, and cart him off to jail. In dismay, [Alex] watches as his mother, who isn't part of the march, falls to the street.
Caught up in an ambiguous reality, Alex himself becomes enchanted with his mother's fantasy. He enjoys the peacefulness of her protected world, a DDR of idealism and kindness that never really existed. The DDR Alex creates becomes the country of his dreams. What's missing is the history of oppression and deprivation that was equally a part of East Germany's reality.See the full content of this document
