The first step in pest control is to correctly identify the pest. Without knowing what the problem is, you have little hope in victory over troublesome insects, diseases or weeds. If your garden problem has a noninfectious cause (such as weather, chemical damage, soil compaction, etc.), you may be wasting time, effort and money without any chance for success.

One example I am seeing is early spring weed control in lawns. A gardener asked me about crabgrass control. I started giving my standard list of cultural and chemical control options, when something he said made me pause. He stated that the crabgrass was already invading his lawn and was spreading into his flower beds. This is not what I would expect from crabgrass, especially in early April. A little more questioning proved that his weed was not crabgrass but the highly invasive Bermuda grass.
