The Avanxis IV from Agfa is a capstan-based imagesetter for four-up format jobs, able to image both positive and negative films. The Avanxis IV can image Agfa Setprint Plus polyester printing plates, making it suitable as an introductory CTP workflow solution. Agfa also offers the Acento E/S line, a pair of thermal platesetting devices for four-up printing jobs that utilize infrared thermal lighting with an 830 nm Grating Light Valve and an external drum.

Ready, Set, Print: Platesetters, Imagesetters, and Related Materials

In recent years, digital computer-to-plate and computerto-press (CTP) technology has been considered "the next big thing" in the output of printed pages. However, filmbased imagesetters and platesetters are not yet a dead industry. Despite a decade of predictions about digital CTP completely replacing "old-fashioned" film technology, the reality is that many shops still use film and intend to keep doing so. However, the changeover has begun, if more slowly than some had predicted.
