Summary

Although there are a couple dozen photographers listed in the program, there isn't much photography on display. A favorite was Arnie Clute's "Missing You," a small black-and-white view out a hotel window. Like most photos and paintings that command your attention for longer than a few seconds, this one works because it implies more than the frame can contain. Andy Freeberg's large black-and-white "Coyote Buttes," on the other hand, doesn't imply much, but is a compositionally arresting view of a bare human back in a smooth-walled natural chimney. From San Rafael's Michael Fahey is a fascinating piece called "The Winemaker." Described as a photo-Fahey is a professional photographer-the large image looks very much like a painting, with most of the detail obliterated and the major elements reduced to blotches of light and shadow. Is it a hand-painted photo, a Photoshop exercise or some combination of the two?
