Summary

In a part of Philadelphia rich with insurance history, Ace Ltd has made its own mark on time. The company's North America headquarters at 436 Walnut St is the first existing building in the city to achieve silver LEED certification. The effort has resulted in a 17% reduction in energy use for the 12-story, 360,000-square-foot building, according to Melissa Young, environmental analyst for Ace Group. One step at Ace's building involved simply changing the aerators on bathroom faucets. The change reduced the two-gallons-per-minute water flow to just a half gallon; potable water consumption dropped 16%. Young said that 57% of building waste is now recycled, which through mid-December included 115 tons of office paper and 200 pounds of batteries.
