The most rewarding part of publication has been an opportunity, using the popularity and power of sports, to initiate a national dialogue around themes crucial to African American survival: empowerment, dedication to a common cause, recapturing the spirit of unity and teamwork. During panel discussions and private conversations over the past few months, a number of people have pointed out how great Black athletes of the past - Russell, football legend Jim Brown and, of course, Muhammad Ali - were outspoken on the subject of racial equality. In fact, what faces the contemporary Black athlete and all young African Americans today is more of a challenge than a harrowing struggle: how to pool unprecedented resources to create a new Promised Land inside this new Egypt.
