In the 22 years I've been a mother, I've written plenty of notes to teachers that began with some variation on the phrase: "Dear Mrs. So-and-So, please excuse my child from class... "

This is the first time I've written an excuse note for somebody else's kids. Maybe they won't even need it, but just in case any teacher or administrator at Castle High School is wondering why Chelsea Merta and six of her friends skipped school earlier this week, I can testify as to where they were: On a cleanup crew in Warrick County, picking up debris scattered for miles by last Sunday's lethal tornado.
