Summary

If you are tired of the romantic look, then buy very little right now and save your money for the new styles coming in the fall. If you love the current feminine look, the colors, the adornment--then buy it and wear it, wear it, wear it. You won't be able to find the fun, colorful sandals with flowers encircling the toes in a year or so. But don't save anything that is floral and ruffleedged, anything with an asymmetrical hemline, anything that is very tiny and fitted or bohemian and beaded for only special occasions. Wear it all now and get your money's worth while these pieces are still current. Buy one pair of pointed-toe shoes but not four pairs, because by fall the "point" will be squared off at the top.

Style directions don't change completely and radically overnight. This means most "romantic" things available this season will likely look fine next spring, too, but they will definitely be on their way out. And you may fall in love with something else by then. Don't overbuy right now, and even though quality is always important, don't overspend. Avoid buying any stray pieces from the romantic look that require your finding a companion top or bottom to complete the outfit. As the entire silhouette changes, it becomes difficult to retrofit odd pieces. The new separates will be designed to follow a different shape than what's been around, and colors will have different dye lots.

Why do fashion trends change so often and so predictably, driving some of us into ecstasy and others into madness? Clearly, clothing manufacturers want to sell clothes, so they continually show us something we don't have. But we, the consumers, also are a catalyst. We are visual beings living in a world where seasons change and no sunset is exactly like any other. Inherently, we want celebration in our daily experience, and fashion enchants many. We have to wear something, so why not enjoy it? The other significant catalyst supporting the cycles of women's fashion is quite practical: Women have different body types. Each new style wave flatters one figure type to slightly more advantage than the others; each new color palette is someone's ideal and then, it changes. Every sister has her day. And since the body types are fairly consistent over time, the basic shapes of clothing come in and out of fashion, repeated in different versions over the years. Perhaps the good news here is that the straighter silhouette that is coming next is generally flattering to a range of figures, and is forgiving of many challenges because it skims the body without clinging.

Planning Ahead; Seasonal Clues for New Buys That Will Last Longer

Spring calls us to come out and play. Soft chiffon tops and linen pants whisper to us from our closets. A lavender leather handbag sits on the kitchen table, replacing the sturdy black tote we've carried since last fall. Boots are cast off to make way for a colorful sandal. And the idea of lightening our lipstick to one of the new, sexy, "almost nude" colors has sudden appeal.

But shoppers...
