Plagiarism
I want to give Doug Johnson credit. Johnson, Director of Media and Technology for the Mankato Public Schools and international speaker on a wide spectrum of school library media management issues, has a very similar approach to mine on the subject of prevention and management of plagiarism. For the past thirty years and, probably even before Johnson became a library media specialist, I have believed that we should encourage what can be done rather than concentrate on what should not be done. By engaging students in projects that reward original ideas, the need to copy or cheat is discouraged. Student research should be presented as an opportunity to explore and share, not just learn how to follow another set of rules.
