Important aspects to consider when choosing a server or superserver from the plethora of vendors and products are the number of users and the applications that will be used. A 386-based system is appropriate for a group of less than 20 users, but multiple departments totalling more than 50 users require powerful servers that have upgradeable processors. In a Business Research Group survey, one third of 300 Fortune 1000 firms chose Intel 486-based superservers, and 15 percent chose 386-based microcomputers. In a Forrester Research survey of Fortune 1000 firms, server choices were based on reliability, flexibility and upgradeability. Leading vendors are Compaq Computer Corp, Dell Computer and Everex, as well as Sun Microsystems.
