Summary


My father worked for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, now part of CSX, and our family moved all over the country. We lived in a suburb of New York City, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Cleveland, Ohio, and ended up in Richmond when I was in 10th grade.

I was fortunate enough to get into the University of Virginia, where I received a bachelor of science in commerce from the McIntire School. I had a professor who taught a class on investments and was a trust officer at a bank in Charlottesville. For a 19-year-old, everything about the class made sense because of the way the teacher dressed, the way he talked and the way he got excited about the securities business. After classes, instead of studying, a couple of buddies and I would go down to a brokerage-firm branch in Charlottesville, where we'd sit around and watch the tape with stock prices go by.
