People are our most important (capital) assets.

How many times have you heard someone say "people are our most important assets?' How many times have you said it to someone? In today's "knowledge worker" world, it has become a common phrase, but is it reinforced in an organization's actions and reporting systems? In other worlds, are organizations "walking their talk?" Some would say no, conveying an attitude that it is a phrase frequently said, but less frequently verifiable. Let's examine the implications.

It is apparent that we are in knowledge-based society, where the manufacturing sector is no longer the majority employer. It would be reasonable to except tat knowledge workers would replace machinery as an organization's most important asset. But as some would comment, that's not their perception and perception is, after all, reality.

In an industrial society the focus is on the machine; it's a simple model. Raw material is fed into a machine and a finished good comes out. Workers either operate the machine, or support (and in some cases, control) the machi...
