Summary
It started as a joke at Ryan Adams' expense. One day at practice, Patty Hurst Shifter's singer Chris Smith, a friend of Adams, said they should call their newly minted band Patty Hurst Syndrome, a jibe at Adams' band at the time, the Patty Duke Syndrome. "And I was like, 'No, we should call it Patty Hearst Shifter,'" says lead guitarist Marc Smith. Even back then, before their '02 debut Beestinger Lullabies came out, the Raleigh-based band wasn't sure if they were going to keep the name, but it made it onto concert fliers and they got stuck with it. There's been a problem with the name from the beginning. "Hurst Shifter is a muscle car thing," Smith explains, "and Patty Hearst, you mention the SLA and people in college ask 'What does all that mean? Who is Patty Hearst?'"
