Summary


Nancy Gray, a spokeswoman for the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, estimates that at least 5 percent (nearly 500,000) of the 9.4 million people who visited the park last year were hikers.

One of the gateways to the 520,000-acre park, established in 1940, is from Townsend, about 45 minutes from Knoxville on Tennessee 321. However, touristy Gatlinburg, 18 miles from Townsend, lies at the foot of Mount LeConte and bills itself as the Gateway to the Smoky Mountains. A drive along the Little River Road features views of Meigs Falls and the Sinks waterfall.
