Corporations are increasingly outsourcing the management of their wide area networks (WANs), with many positive effects. Outsourcing network management reduces the company's need to make large up-front IT investments. In addition, Web-based applications can easily be deployed through corporate WANs. Network management functions which can be effectively outsourced include handling link redundancy, alternate carriers, fault tolerant software, fast-packing switching, digital technology, error-checking protocols, passwords, encryption methods, firewalls and broadband networking.
