'Orphanage' ain't for kids
[Laura] (Belén Rueda) and Carlos (Fernando Cayo) have an adopted son, Simón (Roger Príncep), who is HIV positive-a gratuitous detail that proves something of a red herring. Símon has two imaginary friends, Watson and Pepe, but when he goes to explore a scary seaside cave, he finds a whole new set of "playmates," a development that worries Laura somewhat. Much more frightening is Símon's disappearance during a party for a group of handicapped children. Could the boy's "friends" have taken him?The essential outline is spare, even a tad formulaic, but [Denzel Washington] works hard at fleshing out the humanity of his players and their static environment. A team member's strict preacher father (Forest Whitaker) who can't show affection, a bigoted town sheriff (John Heard) rabidly opposed to the local sharecroppers' burgeoning labor union and a moody romance between team leaders Henry Lowe (Nate Parker) and Samantha Booke (Jurnee Smollett) that jeopardizes the team's perfectly calibrated balance.See the full content of this document
