Christopher Yayas is the winner of this year's Key West Writers Guild literary contest. Solares Hill is pleased to print some excerpts from his fiction. Yayas hasn't been writing that long and he hasn't been published before. We're especially pleased the Writers Guild and other groups around town (such as the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Contest) are helping to keep the island's literary tradition alive.

Who is [Howie]? I thought. I know this one. Howie...Howie...who the hell is Howie? The name is sooo familiar - it's right there on the tip of my tongue but I'm still drawing a blank. Just then, Nurse Addy, my favorite nurse, entered the room with my breakfast tray.

This is how Alzheimer's disease starts. Every older person has little memory lapses: forgetting where you put the car keys or what your own phone number is. That's what today they call "senior moments," and those are to be expected. What I'm talking about is the incident this morning when I didn't even know my own name.
