I hadn't seen that part of the country in 40 years. Most of it didn't seem to have changed much. The larger towns all had outskirts full of the same clutter of eyesores we have on North Roosevelt, but mostly there was open road, in good repair and with slight traffic, going through well tended farms and little settlements, with general stores, gas stations, and a dozen or so houses. There were many churches, some not looking like churches at all, more like sheds, housing Christian denominations I had never heard of, and cemeteries with Memorial Day flowers on the graves. There were indications of poverty: a used car lot with three old cars on it, a wreck of a building housing Sharon's Beauty Salon, a supermarket with three customers in it at four in the afternoon. But, though there was no indication of opulence, most of the area showed signs of neatness and order, and work, and comfort. I wouldn't want to live there, but it really is the heartland.
