Chief executives always find themselves being faced with a slew of individuals and agencies wishing to give them advice. These may include managers, employees, suppliers, customers, service agencies, management experts, professors, shareholders, magazine writers and professional management consultants, all of whom have something to say about how a company should be run by the CEO. Presented with a barrage of information from these different camps, the poor chief executive usually ends up being confused and without clear direction. A solution to this dilemma is to choose only those advisers with proven track records. Asking other CEOs and companies helps in determining the entity with a history of desirable performance. Usually, outside directors on the board are the most experienced advisers that CEOs can find.
