Ochoa: musical trends, past and present.

EL CIMARRÓN: The Children of the Night

Cuidado con El Negro Cimarrón was the hook-phrase of a popular guaracha penned by Rubén Blades, which dominated the airwaves in New York City and other urban areas during the height of the "salsa" boom. The group that put this phrase on everyone's lips was pianist Héctor Castro's Conjunto Candela. Blades' catchy lyrics and vocalist Nestor Sánchez's inspired soneos referred to those countless free-spirited runaway slaves who rebelled against the evil institution of slavery during colonial 19th century Cuba.

In essence, what the composer was saying was this: "Don't mess with me, because I'd rather die on the run than live as your slave." Amen to that.
