Nuance Communications and IBM in late January entered into a licensing and technical services agreement that, in effect, gives Nuance the source code for IBM's embedded ViaVoice speech recognition software and WebSphere Voice Server middleware. Additionally, Nuance will purchase several speech-related patents from IBM. According to Nuance, the first integrated speech products combining Nuance and IBM technologies will be available within two years. Although Steve Chambers, president of the mobile, enterprise, and consumer services division, Nuance, says it's too early to be specific, he notes the partnership would likely focus on natural language, "extreme natural language," and noise robustness.
