Brazil is the largest country in Latin America and recent reforms, as well a rising economy have enhanced the country's international status. Brazil is the world's 10th-largest economy, according to the CIA's World Factbook 2009, and its exports of all kind of products are growing, from aircraft and automobiles to iron ore and coffee. On the insurance side, published reports say Brazil may represent more than 40% of the written premiums in the region, but the local market still has big growth potential, driven by low insurance penetration and a favorable economic environment. Despite the great opportunities that marine businesses offer to the new international reinsurers operating in Brazil, new players must still be cautious. Market competition has become strong -- as of August 2009, 66 reinsurers were competing in the Brazilian market.
