How often do people hear something along the lines of: "We are engineering the future -- it is going to be perfect". The truth is that it is not true. Unfortunately, what seems to be happening is that conferences on utility credit and billing are springing up like mushrooms in the autumn. And the wider truth is that massive computer projects and renewal programs never deliver the ultimate solutions they promise. This is why, at every conference, people always hear about another one, because the last one did not work. Utilities have a tendency to define and build systems for the world as they would like it to be. Sadly it is not the world people live in. So, systems never work properly, and someone else at a credit and billing conference in Amsterdam in five years' time will be saying more or less the same things among various identikit presentations, lots of consensus and congratulations.
