Inside KK Market, a neighborhood store located just down the street from where [Fernando Santos] was shot to death, coowner Chulhe Kim rings up tall cans of Budweiser and Mexico phone cards. Her regulars call her "China" (she's Korean). She plays along with the racial misnomer as she has for the past 24 years, and even gave herself the name [Gloria De La Rosa] because it's easier to pronounce.

At the Nov. 13 meeting, held at a community center on Williams Road, [Rose Colon] suggests restarting a program that designated block parents, tasked with watching over their neighbors and those in need. "We can no lonclose our doors and close our blinds and say 'If it didn't happen to me, it didn't happen,'" she says.

"My sister got shot on the Fourth of July," she says. "I thought it could have been her but thank God it wasn't."
