Christopher Kush, the store's owner, describes his enterprise as "a love letter to Key West." Kush has been visiting the island for 12 years and last year bought a condo in Old Town.

Even the store's manager, longtime island resident [Peter Rogers], was doubtful. "Do you think people still read?" he says he asked Kush as they were preparing to open the store. As soon as the doors opened, he got his answer.

"Key West is a special place. It's a highly literate place," he says. "It doesn't feel to me like it would be impossible to put an independent bookstore in the middle of a thriving literary community.
