INTRODUCTION

Over the past two decades, nanotechnology has been pursued and developed at a rapid pace. In 1990, approximately 1,000 scientific publications on nanotechnology were published and over 200 nanotechnological patent applications were filed. (1) Cumulatively by 2002, these numbers increased to include 22,000 manuscripts published worldwide, and over 1,900 patent applications filed--a clear representation of the growing interest and financial investment in this biotechnology.

Currently, nanotechnologies are being used in a broad range of commercial products with applications for both consumers and patients. The cosmetic industry can boast filing the highest number of patents for the development and use of nanoparticles. (2) Today, nanotechnologies are being employed predominantly as nanomaterials in sunscreens, emollients, soaps, shampoos, lipstick, eye shadow, aftershave products, deodorants and anti-aging products.
