This month, National Association of Credit Management (NACM) hosted advocacy day on Capitol Hill for members to visit the Hill and learn about significant legislative issues. Legislation to provide greater protection to consumers who have been subjected to a loss of their personal data or have been the target of identity theft has become a major priority for Congress. The most likely legislative vehicle to move will be H.R. 4127. The bill would allow state attorneys general to carry out enforcement and provide consumers a right to access and correct information held by data brokers. NACM needs to work hard to ensure that the impact of these measures are clearly limited to consumer breaches and do not extend to commercial related information.
