Myth of the gunslinger.

On a certain day in each semester at the University of Southern California, a line of students forms in a subterranean campus building. The first ones arrive at dawn. By early morning, a diverse assortment of student types, dressed in khakis, homeboy gear, or Valley Girl flash, snakes through almost every hallway in this basement corridor.

It makes Jon Goodman laugh. These students aren't waiting for Grateful Dead tickets or free beer. The object of their desire is an application form to the university's Entrepreneur Program. "It really is like trying to get concert tickets to the hottest show in town," says Robert Rossoff, the program's business manager.

Goodman, a lifelong entrepreneur, took over as director of the Entrepreneur Program in 1988. Like a CEO, she "grew" her program from a small branch of the business school to one of the most popular departments on campus. She wielded her substantial Rolodex to bring in successf...
