Young Tung of Philly's punk outfit [Phil Moore Browne] describes the band as a bunch of "artist guys" who weave work into their performance to arrive at "a 3-D poem." PMB's live act, consisting of a live band, two vocalists, animation, dolls, paintings and even nooses, has lately garnered a wealth of critical attention. When Slug of Atmosphere saw the band at Philly's Warped Tour, he immediately asked them to accompany him on part of the @ It Again Tour. Their genre-busting sound, described by Young Tung as "zigaboo gospel negro punk poetry," will soon be available for mass consumption with the release of Motel Moore (The Lobbies Sessions). Meaning "crazy gospel," Phil Moore Browne's brand of zigaboo is the perfect antidote to tame music fronting as cutting-edge.
[Regina Spektor]'s songs for (mostly) solo piano are slices of Neapolitan ice cream, the three flavors being meander, dramatic and sweet. The latter can get icky--her crazy-smart lyrics are often cut with cuteness. But on Soviet Kitsch it's Spektor's twisty and reflective songwriting that really saves the day. Her singing washes over the keyboard like a tumble of 18th-century adjectives, and the notes are always classically trained and clever. Whether she's sappy or serious, there's little that's traditional about Spektor's work, and that makes her an intriguing creature.
