Summary

DISTRICT 9 ** Co-writer director Neill Biomkamp sets this movie's pivotal event-the arriva! of a derelict alien spacecraft over South Africa, leaving more than a million extraterrestrial refugees- in the 1980s. But apparently that's when he learned everything he needed to know about allegorical science fiction. Rated R. At Century Cinemas Del Monte Center. Maya Cinemas, Northridge Cinemas, Lighthouse Cinemas. SR

STAR TREK (IMAX) ***; 1/2 Director JJ. Abrams Alias, Mission: Impossible lit) has shown that he knows both how to deliver brainy action, and how to leave his distinctive thumbprint on an existing franchise. With Star Trek, he turns out a terrifically energetic, highly entertaining summer adventure. Following in the footsteps of his late father, young hotshot James Kirk (Chris Pine) enlists with Start leet to become an officer, the half-human/half-Vulcan Spock (Zachary Quinto) is already first officer to veteran Capt Pike (Bruce Greenwood). When a mysterious Romulan called Nero (Eric Bana) threatens the very existence of the planet Vulcan, Kirk and Spock find themselves together on the starship Enterprise, attempting to prevent planetary genocide. And wouldn't you know it, but Kirk and Spock have a history- or maybe a future- with our bad guy. This film works because it's recognizably Star Trek, and also because it's not only recognizably Star Trek. That's what I'd call going boldly. Rated PG-13. At Cannery Row IMAX Theatre. SR

THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE *;* 1/2 Audrey Niffenegger*s beloved novel-turned movie has interesting and intriguing and dangerous and nasty things you can do when you can meet future or past versions of yourself, or when you have foreknowledge or sidewise knowledge of events, and when you don't have to worry about the time-travel paradoxes that most science fiction worries about. The core of what makes The Time Traveler's Wife so special has been retained. The poignant tenderness and the sharp signifi canee of the metaphor of the twisty, time bending romance of Henry (Eric Sana), a Chicago librarian. and Clare Abshire (Rachel McAdams). an artist, are what's important, and the movie gets it so right. Rated PG-13. At Century Cinemas Del Monte Center, Maya Cinemas, North ridge Cinemas. Lighthouse Cinemas. MJ
