Industry Overview

Lumber prices and timber availability made major improvements in 1996 but did not result in increased production and employment. Improved US economic conditions and increased demands from the housing industry contributed to the sharp price increases which were about 30% higher than 1995 figures. Overall, there will be a continued growth for plywood and lumber in 1997 despite a weaker housing industry but timber availability will decline.
