For years, the surgery performed on patients with genetic degenerative back conditions has seen little in the way of successful surgical options. The cost of these failed back surgeries has been significant, and yet there are still concerns about the effectiveness of traditional spine surgery methods.

Dr. Charles Burton, who has his neurosurgery training at Johns Hopkins University, is one of the primary researchers investigating why back surgeries fail and has spent over 20 years working on ways to improve traditional methods of restorative spine surgery. "People are not aware that there are other good options out there," says Dr. Burton.

In 1974, Dr. Burton, then an associate professor of neurosurgery at Temple University in Philadelphia, moved to the Twin Cities and cofounded the Department of Neuroaugmentive Surgery at Sister Kenny Institute in Minneapolis. He has since published over 100 papers on the subject of restorative procedures and says patients today have much more information available to them to discover their best treatment options.
