Steven LaTourette is not some liberal dove when it comes to the war in Iraq. A former Lake County prosecutor before becoming a Republican member of Congress, he has consistently voted with the president on the issue of the Iraq war, and opposed the two Democratic supplemental bills to fund the war - and to put in a timetable for withdrawal of American troops from Iraq - as full of "gimmicks and pork," his spokesperson, Deborah Sutliffe, said.

The fact that these congressmen met with the president - and that at least some of them reported on the meeting, which was considered private - reflects a rising restiveness among many in the Republican ranks toward the war in Iraq. Indeed, it was Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, a Vietnam veteran and recent critic of the war, who said that "these 11 House Republicans speak for more than 11 house Republicans," but for many who are losing patience with the war in Iraq.
