Summary


The marked the first time that the lab hired a Senegalese fisheries scientist. In the 1960s, a major fisheries survey was conducted off the coast of West Africa by Europeans and North Americans. There was only token and junior representation of younger African scientist.

The success of that effort has led to five projects involving countries from Morocco to Kenya (only Somalia is missing due to its instability). Three LME efforts are just starting, but the Guinea Current and the Bengucla Current LMEs coxerinj: the Atlantic coast of Africa from Guinea to South Africa are in operation.

The series pointed out that "A vast flotilla of industrial trawlers from the European Union, Russia, China and elsewhere, together with an abundance of local boats, have so thoroughly scoured northwest Africa's ocean floor that major fish populations are collapsing."
