Summary
For the majority of accredited continuing medical education (CME) providers, outcomes assessment is uncharted territory. But they are beginning to blaze a new path by looking at benchmarks such as longer-term retention of learning, the impact of CME on performance and the impact on patient and population health. One provider that has moved beyond rudimentary approaches is CME LLC. For its Lifelong Learning Initiative on Bipolar Disorder, physicians were asked to report on their behavior at three points: pre- and posttest and after three months. Meanwhile, Northern California Kaiser Permanente is using prescribing data to measure CME's effect on patient care within its own healthcare system.
