"It's never stopped. My sister and I, in our travels, we have been standing in line and the White person behind the counter will look dead at us and wait on the next White person in line," she said. "There's so much that's making some of my songs even more relevant than they were in the '60s."

Another song on the album, "99 and a Half Won't Do" is about "the oppression that Black people have gone through," she said, "back before my father's time."

In addition to traditional songs from the civil rights movement, "We'll Never Turn Back" also features two new songs. Acclaimed producer Ry Cooder wrote "I'll Be Rested," while [Mavis Staples] penned "I Saw It with My Own Eyes."
