"He sends a newsletter every now and then," said one participant, who did not wish to give her name. "He is doing things for organizations, but I don't think he does much for Mattapan. I just wish there was someone out there to run against him, because when politicians have competition they become better politicians."

"I think the speaker does a good job staying in touch with his constituents," said the spokesman, Charles Rasmussen. "Does he go to every community meeting? No. But does he have staff go to meetings? Absolutely. The issues important to people in the district, be they housing, development, transportation or jobs, when they have questions about those, the questions get answered."

"Candidates have the rights of review, the ballot has to be printed," he said. "It is a very thorough schedule. I took two weeks away from my own administrative time to extend the filing deadline."
