"I knew once we picked up that first down [in overtime] I wasn't going to do anything stupid," Marion-Franklin coach Brian Haffele said. "I wanted to keep the ball in the middle of the field so it would be as easy as possible for Chris. He's a kid who came over from the soccer team, and he had a strong leg all along. But we had to teach him how to kick a football and he's really taken to it.

"I have tremendous respect for [coach] Byron [Mattox] and the guys on that coaching staff," Haffele said. "We grew up pretty much together, so when he got the job I called him up and said 'Man, this is going to be a helluva rivalry isn't it?'"

"That was a great game to watch if you were just a fan of good, hard-nosed football," Haffele said. "'But it doesn't do much for coaches."
