Manufacturing excellence is a moving target, with improvements continually being announced.

A major manufacturer of consumer products was about to tool up for quantities of a new product - proved in tests, but not in the marketplace. In the first three years, product technology changed twice: market demand exceeded expectations by fourfold. The product: ABS braking systems. Manufacturing plans were changed to the use of flexible cells, so that they could easily be altered to keep pace with demand and to accommodate product design changes.
