THANKS FOR THE nonprofit article ("New year, same troubles for NJ. nonprofits," Dec. 28). There is no doubt that nonprofits are struggling from reduced revenue, and your advice to stick to the mission is spot on. The term we keep hearing, however, is the "new normal," suggesting that this crisis is different from other revenue challenges historically. It is very different and very clear that this sector just can't continue as it is now.
The answer is complicated, but a significant driver for some nonprofits is the boards of directors who care deeply for their agencies but aren't very knowledgeable about their organizations, or don't know where to start a process of being the acquirer or acquiree. For-profit organizations could have an important role in saving the essential services that our nonprofit groups provide by funding nonprofit merger activity, which will also make the company or foundation's future philanthropy dollar go further by paying for less infrastructure and more client services.See the full content of this document
