When you say it, especially to someone young, half a century seems like a long time. But when you live it, 50 years can go by remarkably fast.

So it seems impossible to me that it's been 50 years since the black struggle for equality spilled into the streets in the mid- 1950s or that it's been nearly 40 years since the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was gunned down in Memphis.
