Jury Awards $4.5 Million for Hog Stench

Summary


In one of the largest verdicts of its kind, a Jackson County jury returned a $4.5 million verdict on Friday in favor of three northwest Missouri families.

The families, who each received $1.5 million, complained that hog confinements operated by ContiGroup Cos. and Premium Standard Farms near their homes created a "rotten egg" stench that affected their quality of life. It was one of the biggest verdicts against any company of this kind in the nation, according to plaintiffs' attorney Charles Speer, of the Speer Law Firm.
