In one of the largest verdicts of its kind, a Jackson County jury returned a $4.5 million verdict on Friday in favor of three northwest Missouri families.
The families, who each received $1.5 million, complained that hog confinements operated by ContiGroup Cos. and Premium Standard Farms near their homes created a "rotten egg" stench that affected their quality of life.
