A Bookman's Year

For anyone who likes books and can at least tolerate people, the bookselling business cannot be beaten. Each day is an adventure; as in libraries, one never knows what the next approach will bring, what inquiry or request will be forthcoming; not to mention the constant excitement of receiving new books. In such an unpredictable environment, everything one knows, all one's experience, is grist for the mill. And one becomes adept at bluffing one's way through situations that are outside one's knowledge and experience--after all, one cannot be expected to have read every book in the shop, though that is what customers often presume.

After almost fifteen years in the business, I decided to keep a journal of my bookish activities over a year's time, if only to provide something that might amuse me in my dotage. Here are some excerpts.

New Year's Day. Drove up to Hassop in Derbyshire to visit the Country Bookstore and make a selection of Bargain Books. I discovered this treasure trove of cheapies a few years ago; it has proved a reliable source of stock for the post-Christmas and Summer Book Sales. The store is housed in a former railway station.
