John A. "Zepp" Zeller, 89, of Smoketown, Pa., formerly of New Freedom, Pa. and Maryland, died February 11, 2010 at his home. He is survived by his long-time companion and fiancee' Nancy L. Sweigart; nieces Julia P. Eppler and Marcia P. Reihart and their families; nephew Dr. Paul J. Prosser, III and his family; brother Robert P. Zeller and his family; children JoAnn Norris and John Zeller and their families; and his former wife Ethel (Sutton) Zeller. Mr. Zeller was preceded in death by two sisters, Julia Z. Prosser and Mary Lois Horn; and his parents, John A. and Beulah Mae (Young) Zeller.
Mr. Zeller worked on the family farm as a young man and enlisted in the Army during World War II. He was in the third wave of soldiers at Omaha Beach on D-Day, and earned three Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star while attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the war Mr. Zeller began a rich and varied career as a tool and die maker at Black and Decker Corporation in Hampstead, Md. He would later own a residential painting business, own and operate the former Tally Ho Motel on 14th Street in Ocean City, Md., and work as a maintenance supervisor at the former Watt and Shand in Lancaster, Pa. and at Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market in Bird-in-Hand, Pa., retiring in 2004.
