John A. 'Zepp' Zeller

Summary


John A. "Zepp" Zeller, 89, of Smoketown, Pa., formerly of New Freedom, Pa. and Maryland, died February 11, 2010 at his home. He is survived by his long-time companion and fiancee' Nancy L. Sweigart; nieces Julia P. Eppler and Marcia P. Reihart and their families; nephew Dr. Paul J. Prosser, III and his family; brother Robert P. Zeller and his family; children JoAnn Norris and John Zeller and their families; and his former wife Ethel (Sutton) Zeller. Mr. Zeller was preceded in death by two sisters, Julia Z. Prosser and Mary Lois Horn; and his parents, John A. and Beulah Mae (Young) Zeller.

Mr. Zeller worked on the family farm as a young man and enlisted in the Army during World War II. He was in the third wave of soldiers at Omaha Beach on D-Day, and earned three Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star while attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the war Mr. Zeller began a rich and varied career as a tool and die maker at Black and Decker Corporation in Hampstead, Md. He would later own a residential painting business, own and operate the former Tally Ho Motel on 14th Street in Ocean City, Md., and work as a maintenance supervisor at the former Watt and Shand in Lancaster, Pa. and at Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market in Bird-in-Hand, Pa., retiring in 2004. Mr. Zeller enjoyed driving sports cars, attending thoroughbred horse races, and caring for his beloved poodles.
