Summary


In 1968, the group signed to legendary Memphis soul label Stax Records, where they experienced their biggest crossover successes to the R&B and pop charts. The Staples Singers hit the Top 40 eight times between 1971 and 1975, including two No. 1 singles, "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again," and the No. 2 single, "Who Took the Merry Out of Christmas?"

The Staples Singers also recorded [Bob Dylan]'s "Blowin' in the Wind," which "Pops" Staples was drawn to because of the lyrics, "How many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man?"

"I feel like I'm doing good. I feel like I'm singing songs that give people a reason to get up in the morning. The smiles I see on people's faces in the audience" make it all worth it, she said. "There's a lot of things that keep old [Mavis Staples] going."

Jazz Orchestra to Welcome Legendary Mavis Staples

Gospel and soul legend Mavis Staples will join the Columbus Jazz Orchestra for a special engagement on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19, at 8 p.m. at the Southern Theatre, 21 E. Main St. The program is titled, appropriately, "The Gqspel Truth: From Spirituals to Swing."
