It's Cricket, Mate

Summary

FOR WEEKS over December and the first week of January, I sat through, for the most part, the Ashes five-test cricket series matches between Australia and its old country England. If the English have boasted that they had taught Australians how to play cricket, especially after winning the Ashes in 2005, perhaps they had spoken a tad too soon. In the 2006-07 summer season of madness, by ritual, the Australians have more than taught the English a thing or two about cricket: the Aussies - or Ozzies, as they proudly call themselves - buried the English 5-0.

The triumphs of Australian cricket, coupled with the prowess of Australian soccer at the FIFA World Cup, and other major victories by Australian sports, exemplifies as it also epitomises the new Australian character: growing confidence and attitude - from local and national to international fields, and in all arenas of human endeavour. Everybody there is having a go at it, and they're reaping the rewards of solid economic policymaking and management, underpinned by a very stable, open and accountable political governance.
