IP-based virtual private networks (VPN) have become more appealing because of the refinements in IP standards. According to John Lawler, VPN product line manager, Concentric Network; and with Robert McKinney, director of VPN & Internet security, GTE Internetworking, enterprises are buying VPN for its performance guarantees and application hosting. The IPSec security standard meets concerns about integrating VPNs with the Internet, Lawler contends. GTE's McKinney views IPSec as an essential foundation for interoperability.
