Into the Woods

Summary

THERE'S PROBABLY no Stephen Sondheim show which more divides fans than Into the Woods, the musical he wrote with James Lapine about what comes after "happily ever after." It's not two groups debating the merits of the show; it's one group loving Act I but hating Act II, and vice versa.

For some reason, that's not enough: [Kent Gash] feels the need to "improve" the show. His scattershot staging sometimes blunts the play's power, while the needless technical add-ons are just distracting. All that flying he's got these kids doing? No. I'm sorry, Kent, but no. Every time you yank one of them up into the flies, you yank us out of the story. (And I can't even imagine what's behind the outright steal of the staging of Wicked's first-act curtain.)
