Bagels, fine chocolates and something called a gobo. This year's Entrepreneur of the Year award winners also make loudspeakers and car parts, finance used cars, write software, truck chemicals and ship Pokemon cards. One can be recognized by a slick handlebar moustache, another by a giant, hairy Bigfoot creature.
The Entrepreneur of the Year awards, run by the accounting/consulting firm Ernst & Young, recognize entrepreneurs in a number of categories, from manufacturing to retailing to financial services. Indiana winners this year competed in regional contests, including the "Indiana Heartland" contest, focusing on central and southern Indiana, and a northern Indiana contest. RETAIL WINNERS BIGFOOT SIGHTING Everyone who has filled up a gas tank in the past several months knows what a roller-coaster business petroleum marketing can be. It's as bewildering for gas-station owners as it is for customers. "Gas margins and prices are outside of our control. We don't have a consistent margin there," says Richard L. Johnson, chairman of Johnson Oil Co. in Columbus. That's one reason most gas stations these days sell a lot more than gas. "What the convenience store does for us is give us some predictable profit every month that we can count on."
